CMS Issues NGHP Alert Regarding Medicare Beneficiary Identifier Reporting

Pursuant to the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015, CMS replaced beneficiary Medicare cards containing Social Security based Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICN) with a new unique Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).  Although MBIs will officially be utilized by CMS January 1, 2020,  MACRA does provide an exemption for the use SSN based identifiers for Medicare Secondary Payer purposes.

Consistent with this policy, this new alert from CMS states that NGHP RREs are not required to resubmit Section 111 Claim Input Records that contained a HICN and replace this with the new MBI.  RREs who want to provide the MBI information  can do so by sending an updated record with the MBI as the Injured Party Medicare ID, but should not delete or re-add to previously submitted records.  For further questions, RREs are directed to contact their EDI representative.
